What is the pathognomonie significance of finding hemoglobin F at an age at which it is usually no longer present? IIemoglobin F is demonstrated by the usual routine methods until about the ago of four months. There has been evidence based on results obtained with more refined technique that we have to advance that age, possibly by several months, and as far as very small amounts are concerned, even by. Nevertheless any percentage higher than 3.4 or say, 5 %) after the age of six months should be a subject of serious consideration and should -not be accepted as physiological unless a congenital anemia has been excluded. What is the significance of hemoglobin F at this later age? It is a marker, an indication that there has been a stress borne by the bone-marrow which began at an age at which hemoglobin F production had not yet disappeared and .which has since continued - an anemia or another bone-marrow stress of early onset.
