Genetic problems and genetic services in Malaysia: a country report

Malaysia is a multi-ethnic country and constitutes a large gene pool. Genetic problems are therefore common. In common with neighbouring countries, red cell genetic disorders lead in importance, and most studies have been directed at these diseases. Cytogenetic and biochemical technics have unveiled the occurrence of other types of problems, some. of which are no less important. DNA technology has allowed exact recognition of lesions, enabling precise diagnosis. Some of these technics can be offerred for prenatal diagnosis even at this stage, but legal considerations virtually preclude the use of this mode of disease control, at least for the moment. The future, however, still holds out a promise of a stronger genetics service not only in cytogenetics but also molecular and biochemical genetics with a larger number of workers working on a greater number of congenital and genetic diseases over a wider range of disciplines. With more investment placed on research and development in the field of genetics, the country will undoubtedly benefit from better prevention and management of these diseases
