Lungs and spleen of mice were examined after intranasal and i/p challenge with Coxiella burnetii. The bacteria inhabited vacuoles in lung alveolar macrophages and spleen reticular cells, and were surrounded by three-layered walls. The vacuoles were stable, and were formed from phagolysosomes.
