The muscular system of the ventral diaphragm of Locusta migratoria (L.) consists of parallel muscle fibres, which are connected by structures like intercalated discs within transverse bridges. Each muscle fibre is enveloped by a thick sheath of connective tissue. The fibres are attached to the cuticula by means of hypodermic cells with tonofibrils. The muscular components are described and modifications caused by use of the freeze-substitution method are discussed.
