Using adult education for empowerment of rural women

This paper shows how functional literacy education could be used to facilitate empowerment among rural women. It also presents the results of a survey that assessed the level of empowerment among the women (n=200) of the Mo communities in the Brong-Ahafo region of Ghana. It is shown that although women in these communities have a high level of participation in decision-making both at home and in the community and some level of economic independence, much needs to be done to further enhance their skills for higher education, income generation, and participation in decision-making. Adult education is therefore crucial to enhance the women's capabilities.
