25 foetuses or newborn Swiss mice of both sexes were killed at regular intervals of 24 h from the 19th day of gestation to the 2nd day post partum, and growth of the pairs of inguinal mammary glands was assessed by planimetric volume estimation and by weight. In the female mice, mammary gland growth showed a positive increase throughout; in the male mice, development of the mammary glands slowed down at birth but became more rapid than that of the body between the 1st and 2nd day.
