Subcutaneous injection of ergocornine methanesulphonate or 2-Br- alpha -ergocryptine, each at 0.2 mg/day for 20 days, into C3H/Bi mice (a strain having a high incidence of spontaneous mammary tumours) markedly depressed pituitary, serum and urine prolactin concn. (P < 0.01 compared with saline-injected controls); the treatments had no appreciable effect on serum or urine GH concn., but slightly raised pituitary GH. The wt. of various organs were decreased after drug treatment (P < 0.01 for mammary glands). Compared with saline-injected controls, drug treatment resulted in decreases in mammary RNA and DNA content of 19-29% (P < 0.01) and 10-11% respectively.
