When tri-o-cresyl phosphate (TOCP) was given in a diet based on torula yeast low in Se and vitamin E growth ceased and there were deaths among rats and Japanese quail. Supplementation of the rat diets with different amounts of Se or vitamin E prevented both growth cessation and mortality. Rats that had ceased growing after TOCP was given responded with renewed growth when the diet was supplemented with vitamin E or Se; the response to Se was significantly greater than the response to vitamin E, suggesting that TOCP may be a Se antagonist. There was a tendency for TOCP to increase the specific activity of lipase homogenates. When Japanese quail were given TOCP, the gains were significantly greater and the mortality was lower when Se than when vitamin E was added.
