Preliminary toxicity and teratogenicity testing of captan in Japanese quail embryos

Technical-grade captan (92%) was tested in Japanese quail embryos for embryotoxic and/or teratogenic effects. Different doses of the fungicide were injected into the air space of embryonated eggs on the 9th day of incubation. On the 14th day, the eggs were opened to determine the number of live and dead embryos, deformed embryos, type of changes and body weights. Preliminary studies showed that captan is embryotoxic and teratogenic for the quail embryo, above all in the critical dose range of 10-20 mg/kg. Higher doses caused a significantly increased mortality, while the incidence of deformities tended to decrease.
