Dietary cadmium (75 mg/kg diet given daily from hatching to 4 weeks of age) produced intestinal lesions in quail, limited to the proximal small intestine. There was shortening and thickening of intestinal villi, stratification of surface epithelial cells, inflammatory cell infiltration, and extensive goblet cell hyperplasia and hypertrophy. These lesions are compared to similar lesions occurring in human jejunum in various malabsorption syndromes.
