For the diagnosis of dictyocauliasis in cattle, Dictyocaulus viviparus has to be distinguished from the adults and larvae of free-living and gastro-intestinal nematodes. Baermann's method is most suitable for diagnostic purposes; for prepatent stages a dissection of the respiratory system has to be carried out.
