Although ketamine is described as a general anaesthetic agent it is felt that the drug is most valuable as an immobilising agent for examinations, X-ray procedures, and prior to the induction of general anaesthesia with conventional agents. The main advantage of the drug is that it produces reliable and rapid immobilisation after intramuscular administration.
