The midgut of freshly fed Gerris spinolae, a pond skater which sucks the haemolymph of insects, had trypsin, amylase, invertase and maltase. With the exception of amylase the same enzymes were present in the hindgut. Starvation for 2 days suppressed enzyme secretion. The pH of the gut and accessory glands was between 7.1 and 5.6. The main lobe only of the salivary glands produced trypsin.
