This session on "Nutrition and Development" focuses attention on the public health importance and lasting consequences of early malnutrition. It emphasizes that nutrition of the fetus in utero and of the child during the early years of live has a profound influence not only on morbidity and mortality at these ages but also on morbidity, physical and mental capacity, throughout life including the later development of chronic degenerative diseases. Most, but of course not all, individuals are given a genotype that can lead to a long and healthy life, but we begin to damage that potential in utero and continue to do so throughout life by a variety of destructive behaviors and environmental influences among which poor food habits, nutritional deficiencies and excesses are of major importance. This is the new paradigm of public health nutrition that is having a major influence on national and international health policies.
