Of 30 patients, gastrectomised to different extents, 9 had red cell transketolase activity at or below the lower limit of normal; in 5 the value was considered pathological. After total gastrectomy no patient had such low values. Serum Cu and Zn were slightly lower after partial gastrectomy than in controls, and in 5 of those patients there was slight iron-deficiency anaemia.As an indicator of thiamin nutrition, transketolase values revealed that about a third of gastrectomised patients were deficient in the vitamin to some degree, but this may have been due in part to the debilitating nature of the diseases that preceded operation.
