Effect of DEAE Sephadex on liver vitamin A of lactating rats and their offspring

The effect of feeding with DEAE Sephadex or cholestyramine, anion exchangers which bind bile acids and enhance their faecal excretion, was studied in pregnant and lactating rats and the postpartum changes in liver vitamin A of the mothers and pups were followed. DEAE Sephadex in a 15% fat diet to pregnant and lactating rats reduced liver vitamin A concentration by 27 to 32% in the mothers and their pups. A similar reduction occurred when cholestyramine was given in a 0.9% fat diet. DEAE Sephadex in the 0.9% fat diet for pregnant rats had less effect on liver vitamin A concentration in the mothers and their offspring. When weanling male rats were given DEAE Sephadex in the 0.9% fat diet, liver vitamin A concentration was reduced by 29%.
