The transfer of vitamin A from mother to offspring was studied in mice and rats, under conditions in which the mother was given liberal or restricted supplies of retinol. With a liberal maternal supply the proportion of the vitamin passed to the offspring before parturition was small, as expected from previous research. Larger amounts were transferred during lactation.
