Tuberculosis of the esophagus. Apropos of 7 cases

Radiological findings in seven cases of esophageal tuber-culosis are presented, this affection usually appearing in young subjects after transplantation, as in all the cases reported, the principal symptom being dysphagia. Radiological images vary according to the type of lesion : ulcerated, hypertrophic and stenozing, lacunar often intricated, with ulcerations, buds, spicules, impressions, and sometimes a mediastinal fistula. Extended stenosis with proximal dilatation is observed in fibrous mediastinitis. These images are usually present in the middle third of the esophagus, due to inter- tracheobronchial tuberculous adenopathy development sometimes difficult to demonstrate. Esophageal and bronchial fibroscopy followed by biopsy of the lesions can establish the correct diagnosis, eliminating cancer. This was not the case in two of three operated patients in this series, a previous diagnosis of malignancy having been made. Though rare, esophageal tuberculosis should be considered as a possible diagnosis, particularly after transplantation, as anti-tuberculous treatment usually leads to a favorable outcome.
