The tendency to retention of water and electrolytes is typical of the woman with toxaemia of pregnancy, and in severe cases there may be oliguria or anuria. The administration of pethidine for the relief of labour pains or of the lytic cocktail for sedation is contra-indicated because of the inhibiting effect of pethidine on urinary water and electrolyte excretion.
