This study investigated the anti-Staphylococcus aureus activities of honey, and bovine milk (Al Marai, Al Rawabi, A'Safwa, and Sohar) at various concentrations (6.3, 12.5, 25, 50, and 100%), and of honey, Al Marai milk, honey+Al Marai milk, Al Rawabi milk, and honey+Al Rawabi milk at various time points (hour). Honey showed the highest antibacterial activity, which was evident up to 12.5% concentration. Al Marai and Sohar milk samples showed minimal antibacterial activities at 100% concentration, while Al Rawabi and A'Safwa milk samples showed no inhibitory activity at all concentrations. At various time points, the honey+Al Rawabi milk showed the highest antibacterial activity (measured as % growth inhibition), followed by honey+Al Marai milk, and honey alone. The percentage growth inhibition increased as time increased (100% inhibition after 24 h). Al Marai and Al Rawabi milk alone showed no inhibition at various time points, and appeared to promote the growth of S. aureus. Although the exact mechanisms by which honey in combination with milk acts against S. aureus remain unclear, it is possible that honey releases some of the biogenic peptides in milk that have antimicrobial properties.
