The "chronic depressions". Clinical considerations on dysthymias with prolonged episode

A state of endogenous "chronic depression" was found only in 13 cases among 492 chronic female mental patients hospitalized in the Cogoleto Provincial Hospital. Considering the main features of the clinical syndrome, the course (more than 7 years of duration with initial symptoms before age of 15) and the therapeutic negative results (E.S.T., drugs), the prolongation of chronic depressive symptoms could be attributed more easily to disturbed or disrupted family patient relationship than to somatic factors. The problems regarding the differentiation between "endogenous-reactive" in chronic depressive cases are discussed (ironic "neurotisation" of endogenous episodes?).
