A review of the treatment of the acutely intoxicated chronic alcoholic has been presented. Emphasis is put on a protected treatment environment, immediate alcohol withdrawal, adequate careful sedation, and nutritional and fluid support. The treatment of the common complications is briefly discussed. The need for orientation during the acute treatment phase to the program intended for long-term management is stressed. The author feels that the best available long-term program is Alcoholics Anonymous.
