The cytogenetic effects of nicotine on human leucocytes in culture and mice have been investigated. The results demonstrate a cytotoxic effect of this drug in vitro without producing any chromosome damage. However, gross chromosomal aberrations including fuzzy chromosomes (stickiness), aneuploidy and translocations were observed in the mice receiving low tolerable doses of the drug. The significance of these observations is discussed.
