The level of anxiety and depression in the opinion of patients hospitalized due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

The aim of the research was the subjective estimation of an average state of health and intensification of anxiety and depression of people hospitalised from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. 80 people took part in the research. The average age was M=62.76 (SD=8.21). Both the Self-estimation of Depression Scale according to Zung and Spielberg's State/Trait Anxiety Inventory were used as research instruments. It was determined that the subjective estimation of state of health depends on the intensification of symptoms of depression and anxiety as state and characteristics of personality. The examined people were characterized by high level of anxiety: STAI X1-M=46.78 SD=10.82, STAI X2-M=48.26 SD=7.91. The symptoms of depression, which were discovered among 36% of the examined people, intensified with aging of the examined, sometimes with a lasting of the illness. The complex treatment of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, including depressive and anxiety disorder, would have an influence on more successful treatment of the illness.
