The use of Metomidate, and intramuscular narcotic for birds

The literature is reviewed on four drugs, (pentobarbital, ketamine, and two commercial mixtures of chloral hydrate, pentobarbital, magnesium sulphate and alcohol) used i/m to produce narcosis or anaesthesia in birds. Data on the use of Metomidate for 22 clinical cases are tabulated. The birds were of various species. Doses between 5 and 14.2 mg/kg of 10% solution were given into a pectoral muscle. Halothane, N2O and O2 were given as required. Four birds died: two were already in poor condition, and had received gas, so death could not be directly attributed to the Metomidate. One bird which died had previously been starved overnight, while the last bird recovered from the operation but died 12 hours later. It might be advisable to use a low dose rate (5-8 mg/kg), particularly in debilitated birds, and supplement as required.
