A limited survey in Gambela, Ethiopia, using filtration of one ml of diurnal blood, revealed that 20 (24%) of 82 adult Anuak residents had Wuchereria bancrofti microfilariae, with a higher incidence in males (45%) than in females (17% positive). Most infections were light. 6 of 2,531 Anopheles gambiae and 8 of 2,286 A. funestus contained 3rd-stage larvae of W. bancrofti; filariae were absent in 1,227 Mansonia africana, 2,001 M. uniformis, 183 A. nili and 72 A. pharoensis. Immature filariae (microfilariae, sausage stages and first and 2nd-stage larvae) were found in 7.5% of the A. funestus and 8.1% of the A. gambiae. A limited survey to determine the prevalence of infection with Wuchereria bancrofti in Gambela, Illubabor Province, Ethiopia, was carried out in 1971. Filtration of 1 ml blood showed that 20 of 82 adult Anuak residents were harbouring microfilariae; men had a higher incidence than women. Most of the infections were light. Infective (third-stage) larvae of W. bancrofti were found in 6 out of 2531 females of Anopheles gambiae Giles and 8 of 2286 of A. funestus Giles, but no filariae were found in 1227 females of Mansonia africana (Theo.) or 2001 of M. uniformis (Theo.).
