The absolute and relative linear dimensions of the paired growth plates in the humerus, radius, ulna, femur and tibia of the rat were studied at selected postnatal stages from birth to maturity. The presence of differential rates of elongation at the paired plates of each bone was confirmed. Within creasing skeletal maturity the absolute dimensions of each plate decreased as the specific growth rate decreased. At the same time the ratio between the specific growth rates at the paired growth plates increased. It was suggested that such differential relative growth rates originated early in fetal long bone development and probably find their reflection in the length of the G-l phase of the mitotic cycle. The processes of active and passive cartilaginous growth of the long bones was discussed as was the possible role of extrinsic regulatory processes.
