Female young of hybrid mice fed during pregnancy on a purified diet containing only 1 mu g Mn/g were given the deficient diet until they were killed; control mice were given a diet with 45 mu g Mn/g. Liver tissue was taken at 6 and 12 months of age for histological examination and estimation of enzyme activity and lipid content; liver samples were examined by electron microscopy at 6, 8, 12 and 18 months of age. Pancreas, kidney and heart tissue was examined only at 18 months of age. All the Mn-deficient tissues showed changes in cell membrane integrity; the endoplasmic reticulum was swollen and irregular. Mitochondria in liver, heart and kidney cells had elongated stacked cristae. The lipid content of liver parenchymal and kidney tubule cells was increased. In liver, the activity of succinic and malic dehydrogenases was reduced.
