Ultrastructural peculiarities of the endocrine pancreas capillaries in the genetically obese mice

Some qualitative ultrastructural peculiarities of the capillary wall in the endocrine pancreas of the genetically obese mouse are presented. Two main aspects were noticed: thin, fenestrated capillaries, with large gaps and pores, controlled or not by amorphous diaphragms, connected to intensely granulated A and B cells through a larger pericapillary space in which pericytic processes are sometimes seen; and the aspect of the capillary wall in the vicinity of degranulated cells of C type, provided with a tall, continuous endothelial sheath. In the 1st case, mature, intact B secretory granules are occasionally seen, scattered within the cytoplasm of the endothelia. The presence of pericytes in the endocrine pancreas has not been reported in the literature available to the authors.
