Twenty-six cases (17 men and nine women with a mean age of 40 years) of malaria were reported in Poland in 2002. All cases were imported: 20 from Africa and six from Asia. Most of the cases (15) were caused by Plasmodium falciparum. The youngest patient was 11 years and the oldest was 71 years. Table 1 presented a complete list of cases by gender (M-male, K-female), age, aetiological factor and presumed country of infection. Some kind of chemoprophylaxis was documented in only four cases. In the others, prophylaxis was neither used nor documented. One death resulted from falciparum malaria in Poland in 2002.
