An informal technical meeting sponsored by WHO, was held in June 1985 for the purpose of reviewing the present knowledge of severe and complicated malaria, in order to prepare guidelines for management of clinical cases at all levels of health services. Much of the recent work presented was carried out in Thailand. The review is presented in sections as follows. 1 - Definition of severe Plasmodium falciparum malaria [SPF]; 2 - Pathophysiology of SPF; 3 - Clinical manifestations and laboratory findings in complicated and SPF; 4 - Diagnosis of malaria; 5 - SPF in infants and children; 6 - SPF in pregnancy; 7 - Pharmacology of antimalarials (chloroquine, amodiaquine, quinine, quinidine, quinhaosu, pyrimethamine-sulphadoxine, tetracycline and mefloquine) in complicated and SPF; 8 - Management of complicated and SPF; 9 - Common errors in the management of complicated and SPF; 10 - Acute complications in P. vivax, P. ovale and P. malariae malaria; 11 - Transfusion malaria and other forms of induced malaria; 12 - Research priorities. Measurement of central venous pressure and salt/base equivalent of oral antimalarials are described in 2 short annexes.
