Camptothecin was used in the treatment of 61 patients who had advanced gastrointestinal adenocarcinoma. Thirty-four patients were treated with a single injection administered every 3 weeks at initial doses ranging between 90 and 180 mg/m2. Twenty-seven patients were given 5-day courses repeated every 4 weeks at initial total doses of 55-110 mg/m2. Toxic effects included nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomatitis, dermatitis, alopecia, hemorrhagic cystitis, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, and anemia. Only two of the 61 patients (3%) had partial objective responses after 2 months.
