Human trichinellosis in Poland in 2001

A total of 52 cases of human trichinellosis were reported and registered in Poland in 2001. As in the previous year, most of these cases (41) occurred in the Wielkoposkie voivodeship. A large outbreak (40 cases) in this voivodeship resulted from consumption of raw smoked sausage. Sources of the infestation in 50 cases were from more than 5 [wild?] boars and 3 pigs; the source was unknown in 2 cases. A total of 33 men and 19 women developed the disease (including 3 children under 14 years of age). 16 cases were hospitalized. No deaths from trichinellosis were reported in Poland in 2001.
