Inflammation is now considered a critical pathogenic component of the atherosclerotic process. The initiation and progression of atherosclerosis as well as the pathogenesis of clinical forms of coronary artery disease are mediated by cell adhesion molecules. Their activation is associated with risk factors for atherosclerosis. The most important developments related to cell adhesion molecules and cardiovascular disease are the recognition of a novel target for therapeutics. Moreover the serum levels of adhesion molecules seem to be markers of the risk for cardiovascular events.
