Snowballing obesity: Australians will get run over if they just sit there

This article reports the increasing incidence of overweight and obesity among adults and children in Australia, and discusses their role as risk factors for various diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancers and mental disorders. Lifestyle and dietary factors contributing to the rising incidence of overweight and obesity are highlighted. Some of the current health programmes that have been developed to treat and prevent obesity and overweight are described. To effectively control the growing problem of obesity and overweight in Australia, a concerted effort of all concerned groups is needed.
