The lack of quantitative information on food intakes in Australia and the inadequacies of the few statistics which are available are discussed. The four types of methods used to estimate food intake, the dietary history, 24-h recall, food diary and food-frequency methods, are briefly described and evaluated, along with the 3 sets of food composition tables currently available in Australia. Finally, in comparing 2 major randomized surveys of Australian adults using different methods, it is suggested that the figures for energy are the best indicator of the accuracy of the method.
