Simultaneous electrocardiograms and phonocardiograms were made of nine Shetland pony mares and one mare of ordinary size, all of which had hyperlipaemia. A prolonged electrical systole (interval between Q and T) and a shortened mechanical systole (interval between Q and onset of the second heart sound) were found in all the animals. This so-called 'Hegglin syndrome', characterized clinically by a premature second heart sound, was more pronounced in hyperlipaemic animals that eventually died than in those that recovered. When the duration of the electrical systole exceeded that of the mechanical systole by more than 50 milliseconds, the prognosis was poor.
