The importance of polymerase chain reaction assays in the molecular diagnosis of ehrlichiosis and other tickborne diseases (e.g., Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever and tularaemia) are reviewed. The newly recognized ehrlichiosis agent (Ehrlichia ewingii) in humans is identified. The differences between Lyme disease and southern tick-associated rash illness (STARI), and the role of Borrelia lonestari as the probable aetiologic agent of STARI are discussed.
