Intradermal administration of HDC vaccine in the immunization of people against rabies

A controlled comparative study was conducted with the aim of assessing rabies antibody induction after intradermal application of HDC rabies vaccine according to the WHO post-exposure scheme on days 0, 3, 7, 14, 30 and 90. In 23 volunteers 1/5 of the standard dose of vaccine, i. e. 0,2 ml was applied; 0,1 ml in each forearm. On days 30 and 90 high antibody GMT was achieved in all immunized persons. The antibody GMT was on day 30 2129 ILI/m1 and on day 90 11.59 IU/ml of serum. The second group consisted of 27 volunteers receiving the same series of HDC rabies vaccine according to the same scheme in a standard dose (1.0 ml) in the deltoid muscle; the GMT of antibodies in this group was on day 30 19.57 IU/ml and on day 90 10.66 IU/ml of serum. I•n view of the fact that every rabies antibody value, expressed in GMT, above 0.5 IU/m1 of serum is protective, the results of this study show that the intradermal application of HDC rabies vaccine is a valid and efficient procedure in the protection against rabies.
