The authors compared the efficacy of the thin smear method, standardized thick smear methods of Gein and Kato, flotation methods of Kalantaryan and Brudastov, and the sedimentation method of Krasil'nikov in the diagnosis of Taenia saginata infection in 75 patients. The percentages of positives for the 6 methods were 73.3, 76.0, 78.7, 69.3, 78.7 and 63%, respectively. The authors conclude that the thick smear is the method of choice for mass examination. It takes less time, is easily done, is not affected by the consistency of the faeces and is up to 78% sensitive.
