The widespread procedure with methylene blue for the determination of low concentrations of H2S in the air was investigated with respect to possible improvements for the application in practice. On this occasion was found that Na2S 9 H2O is by all means .suitable for calibration. Starch is suitable for the stabilization of CdS. An aeration of the calibration samples is not necessary for short time measurements. The sediment of Cd(OH)2, obstructive to the taking of samples, can be avoided by addition of NH4C1. By means of a simple dosing procedure the reagents can be given simultaneously to the samples, whereby the variation coefficient and the sensitivity are improved. The influence of agitating after the addition of the reagents, and of the temperature as well as the durability of the samples and the absorbability of the solution, from which the samples were taken, are discussed. On the basis of the results an improved procedure is proposed.
