Hemodynamic evaluation of the Biocor heterologous prosthesis

The hemodynamic data of sixteen patients who received eighteen Biocor glutaraldehide-treated modified orifice porcine xenografts are presented. Eight patients who had mitral replacement showed significant reduction of pressures in the pulmonary circulation and a mean final diastolic gradient of 0.8 mmHg. Six patients had aortic replacement and pressure gradients were found in only two cases (10 and 25 mmHg), with a mean value of 6 mmHg. Two patients had mitral and aortic valve replacement, with good results as to the mitral prosthesis, while gradients of 29 and 48 mmHg were found across the aortic prosthesis of the patients. We conclude that the Biocor aortic prosthesis showed good hemodynamic results, without gradients in the majority of cases, nor significant reflux, but with good mobility of the leaflets.
