Gastrointestinal tolerance to a new macrocrystalline form of nitrofurantoin: a collaborative study

In a collaborative study involving 23 investigators and a total of 399 patients, a new macrocrystalline form of nitrofurantoin evoked gastrointestinal intolerance reactions much less frequently than the tablets of this drug now marketed, in patients with known history of nitrofurantoin intolerance. The new form is as effective as the currently available form, by commonly accepted clinical and biologic criteria.
