First report of Mycobacterium bovis in a muntjac deer

The following article presents the first recorded case of M. bovis infection in free-living muntjac in the United Kingdom, involving an adult female muntjac, in good body condition, that was killed by a stalker in December 2000. No gross lesions suggestive of tuberculosis were evident, however, subsequent colony growth from collected tissue samples was indicative of M. bovis. Identity of the isolate was confirmed by spoligotyping.
