Apolipoprotein E mediates lipoprotein binding to the low density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor and to the LDL receptor-related protein. Apolipoprotein E 139-158 peptide increases micellar binding and endocytosis by hepatocytes. The lipophilicity of the peptide was increased by modification of its N-terminus by acylation with palmitic acid ether. The peptide mediates acute clearance of the lipoproteins and decreases the cholesterol level in rat blood. Total cholesterol level, high density lipoprotein cholesterol and apolipoprotein B were measured in the serum after intravenous administration of the acylated peptide.
