First international ring trial of ELISAs for Salmonella-antibody detection in swine

An international ring trial for Salmonella-ELISAs for swine serology was organized. 12 laboratories participated and used in-house ELISAs or commercially available kits. In total, 47 well-defined sera from various sources, including inoculation studies with Salmonella-strains from serogroups B, C1, C2, D and E1, were tested blindfold. The specificity of most ELISAs was satisfactory, but relatively large differences were found between the sensitivities of the tests. It is concluded that international reference samples should be made available to guarantee a minimum level of sensitivity.
