Methylmethionine-sulphonium chloride, "vitamin V", was given for from 25 to 40 days to 113 men and 19 women with gastric and duodenal ulcers. Dosage was initially 100 mg 3, and sometimes 4, times daily, then 100 to 200 mg daily when a positive effect was established. In patients who had had ulcers for up to 5 years, spontaneous pain diminished in on average 2.93 days and disappeared in 9.8 days; corresponding values for patients with ulcers of longer duration were 4.3 and 14.7 days. After treatment with "vitamin V" pain disappeared in 93 patients, was reduced in 30, and remained unchanged in 9. Treatment was most frequently ineffective in patients with the visceral syndrome combined with cholecysto-choleangitis. The liver was enlarged before treatment in 43 and after treatment in 22 patients. "Vitamin V" improved disorders of the motor function of the stomach and had a favourable effect on secretion, acid formation, enzyme function, excretion and liver function.
