Cigarette smoking and stomach functions (secretion and motility) in duodenal peptic ulcer and other diseases of the digestive organs

The effect of smoking on the secretory and motor function of the stomach was studied in 68 patients with various diseases of the digestive organs. Cigarette smoking in smokers and inhalation of the air contaminated with tobacco smoke by non-mokers greatly intensified secretion of the main components of the gastric contents and the motor function. Cigarette smoking was almost identical to the stimulating capacity of histamine, by its action on the intensity of juice secretion and it exercised greater influence on the motor function than a bread meal. Abuse of tobacco smoking as a result of disorders in the secretory-motor function of the stomach may damage the organ mucosa, aggravate the clinical course of duodenal ulcer and cause development of refluxes.
