Cyanamide interferes with the metabolism of alcohol and is used as a help to dissuade alcoholies from drinking. Cyanamide was tested for mutagenicity by bacterial procedures, with Salmonella typhimurium (Ames test) and Escherichia coli (Devoret test), both in absence and presence of metabolic activation systems. The results show that cyanamide is nonmutagenic with these assays.
