An outbreak of 'red pest' in captive eels was investigated clinically, bacteriologically and histologically. It was shown that the condition was directly related to bad conditions of husbandry, and rapid reduction of the losses was achieved by the application of simple hygienic measures. The organisms involved were Pseudomonas spp., but it was considered that these were facultative pathogens. The histology of the lesion was very similar to that of erythema exudativum multiformes in man.
